Lerners LLP partner Pam Hrick shared her thoughts in a recent Globe and Mail article about the Supreme Court of Canada’s pending decision in a major family violence case. She said, “The case is an opportunity for the court to really highlight the need to have a nuanced understanding of family violence,” emphasizing that the current legal framework is not well-suited to address the full scope and complexity of intimate-partner abuse. 

Hrick underscored the importance of the Court providing clear, practical guidance to lower courts, noting that a more modern and contextual approach could better reflect the realities of coercive control and other non-physical forms of harm, while improving access to justice for survivors.
