About Jacob
Jacob Damstra is a litigation partner practising out of the London office of Lerners LLP, representing clients across Ontario. His broad dispute resolution and advocacy practice focuses on medical and other professional negligence litigation as well as public law, and environmental, municipal, and land use issues. Jacob also has extensive experience in class actions, defamation cases, sports law, commercial and construction litigation, and representing insurers or insureds in coverage disputes. Acting for clients in applications, trials, administrative hearings, judicial reviews and appeals, he has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario as well as the Supreme Court of Canada and numerous administrative boards and tribunals.
Committed to advancing the professional, business, and economic interests of his clients, Jacob applies attention to detail and careful analysis to deliver practical solutions and advice. Jacob takes a purpose-driven approach to the practice of law, focusing on helping people solve difficult problems in some of the most important areas of their lives, whether protecting their professional reputations and livelihoods, or assisting them with their interactions with government, land, and the environment.
Jacob understands that as threats to human health become more pressing and complex, so too do the demands placed upon physicians and other healthcare professionals. He is dedicated to simplifying the complexity of the law and reducing the burden of litigation to allow medical professionals to continue to focus on patient care. In addition to representing physicians, Jacob also regularly acts in professional negligence matters involving accountants, financial advisors, engineers, and construction contractors.
In the environmental, municipal, and land use space, Jacob provides advice and representation to a broad range of clients including municipalities, farmers, developers, builders, and landowners. Jacob’s work in this area includes: planning and development permit applications, appeals, and advocacy; regulatory compliance advice and prosecutions work; real estate transactions and environmental contamination litigation; and issues arising under various statutes including the Environmental Protection Act, Endangered Species Act, Municipal Act, Drainage Act, Conservation Authorities Act, Building Code Act and municipal bylaws, to name a few.
Jacob’s commitment to justice and service extends beyond his clients. In 2024, Jacob was appointed by the Attorney General of Ontario and Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Ontario to the Civil Rules Review Working Group, which was given a mandate to reform Ontario’s civil justice system to reduce delays and costs while increasing efficiency and access to justice. Since 2011, Jacob has served as an Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, including as a Legal Officer in the Office of the Judge Advocate General since 2023. He has served on the boards of directors for multiple charitable and non-profit organizations, as well as on numerous committees, including as a founding member of the Ontario Justice Education Network’s Southwest Regional Committee. Jacob regularly speaks, writes, and teaches about advocacy, ethics and professionalism, and maintaining wellness in the legal profession. He is co-chair of the firm’s Appellate Advocacy Practice Group and the founder and chair of its Environment & Sustainability Committee.
