A Sense of Justice

Lauren Malatesta is a lawyer in the Toronto office of Lerners. She defends regulated health professionals in civil lawsuits involving medical negligence, informed consent and human rights issues. She also has a broad regulatory practice, assisting regulated health professionals in matters before their professional Colleges and acting as independent legal counsel in discipline proceedings. Lauren provides advice and counsel to regulated health professionals on a broad range of issues, including consent and capacity, hospital privileges, and privacy issues.

Prior to joining Lerners, Lauren practiced at a national law firm where she defended hospitals and regulated health professionals in civil lawsuits involving medical negligence and institutional sexual abuse. She has extensive experience with medical negligence lawsuits that involved both individual and mass torts as well as class actions.

Lauren also has experience in defamation and appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal in anti-SLAPP motions.

With a background in science and a deep understanding of the healthcare sector, Lauren takes an analytical and compassionate approach in her defence of regulated health professionals. “I’m detailed and thoughtful in my approach to legal practice,” says Lauren. “Principles are important to me and my clients, especially when practising in the healthcare sector.”

In addition, Lauren maintains a specialty personal injury practice where she represents both plaintiffs and defendants in civil lawsuits involving sexual abuse.

Lauren is passionate about demanding accountability and justice for survivors of sexual abuse. “There is a sense of justice that motivates my work. As a lawyer, I am able to assist people by providing them with concrete advice and guidance in a way that enables them to hold those who wrong them to account.”

In describing her approach to client service, Lauren says, “It's important to listen and learn from clients and earn their trust and respect. When it's time to provide clients with the advice they need, I do so in a clear and direct way that clients appreciate.”

In her spare time, Lauren volunteers for the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic, which provides legal and other services to women and gender-diverse people who have experienced violence and abuse.
