I still remember my first BIO 1001 lecture: seven hundred students packed into an auditorium, the air buzzing with that unmistakable mix of optimism and nervous ambition. The room had barely settled when our professor asked, “Who here wants to be a doctor?” Almost every hand shot up. Mine included.

For as long as I could remember, I believed my life needed to follow a straight, carefully charted course. In the first year of my medical science degree, I mapped out my courses for the next three years with near-military precision. That was the norm. And by all appearances, I fit the mould. I thrived on analytical thinking and problem-solving. I knew how to structure a lab report, interpret data, and navigate multiple‑choice exams.

But one afternoon in my microbiology lab, standing in my lab coat and waiting for cultures to incubate, I had a quiet but unsettling realization: I wasn’t happy. I had been so focused on following the path that I never stopped to ask whether it was my path.

The Courage to Pivot

Making a career transition can feel daunting. There’s the fear of “wasted time.” Fear of starting over. Fear of explaining your choice to others.

But what I’ve learned is this: no experience is wasted. Transitioning to law felt less like abandoning science and more like recalibrating my direction. The skills I developed in STEM never left me. Scientific training taught me to be comfortable with uncertainty; to test assumptions, scrutinize evidence, and revise conclusions when the facts demand it. Legal reasoning demands the same rigour. Researching case law is not so different from combing through primary literature (minus the graphs and significantly more Latin). Both require patience, precision, and a critical eye for detail.

What surprised me the most was how transferable that mindset would be. In science, you learn that answers are rarely absolute; the quality of the evidence available shapes conclusions. Law operates in much the same way. Facts are contested, narratives shift, and the ability to analyze competing interpretations becomes crucial. My STEM background didn’t fade when I stepped into the legal world—it sharpened my approach to law.

Letting Go of the Linear Path

We’re often taught that careers should unfold in clean, predictable sequences. Choose a path early. Stay committed. Don’t deviate.

But careers don’t need to unfold in perfectly straight lines. Often, they bend, pivot, and expand in ways that ultimately align more closely with who we are becoming. Now, as an articling student, I make a habit of asking other lawyers how they discovered their practice areas. No two stories are alike. Many describe careers built through curiosity, opportunity, and the courage to pivot at the right time. Hearing their journeys made me realize how normal it is for careers to change direction.

From Lab Coats to Legal Robes

My transition from science to law has reinforced a simple but powerful truth: science taught me how to think, and law challenges me to apply that thinking in the service of advocacy and justice. I haven’t left my STEM mindset behind; I carry it with me.

And if you had told my lab‑coat‑wearing self that this is where I’d end up, I might have laughed—but I also might have felt, even then, a hint of possibility.
