A Highly Trusted Advocate

Faisal Joseph is a partner in Lerners London office and a member of its Health Law and Insurance Law groups. He draws on many decades of trial experience as a crown attorney at the federal and provincial levels and defence counsel in high-profile criminal cases at all levels of court in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Having served as an advisor to two former prime ministers and cabinet ministers on security, constitutional issues, and legislation, Faisal was also approached for his advice by two former US secretaries of state. He has worked with the CIA, FBI, RCMP, and CSIS on profiling, security legislation, human rights, and investigative procedures.

“A hard worker, tough litigator, and empathetic with clients,” is how Faisal describes himself. Representing individuals rather than big corporations, he considers himself a lawyer for “the little guy.” Faisal is one of the firm’s few

lawyers practising criminal litigation and civil litigation in both prosecutions and defence. “I have absolutely no fear in a courtroom,” he adds.

Faisal knows that sometimes the best advice is bad news. As he explains, “With over 40 years of trial experience and hundreds of cases, I have a pretty good sense what the potential outcome might be. When a client doesn’t have a case, I let them know.

“Making a difference in people's lives and earning their trust are big factors for me. Will they lose their home? Will they ever get back to work? Will they be incarcerated? This is big stuff for people to have to consider and work out with their families when they're going through these very stressful situations. I let clients know they've got someone in their corner, willing to fight for them,” he adds.

In 2015, Faisal was the recipient of the Law Society Medal of Ontario, the highest award given to a trial lawyer. He also received the Middlesex Law Association Award for distinguished service in 2012, as well as The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award for public service. In describing his many years of work with dozens of community organizations, Faisal says, “I've seen the best and the worst of mankind. That gives me a special empathy for people who are dealing with serious issues.” He served as president of the Islamic Centre of Southwestern Ontario and chairman of the Association of London Muslims for several years.

Outside of practice, Faisal advocates for human rights and enjoys basketball, tennis, golf, and travel.
