We Trade on a Reputation

Cynthia Kuehl is a Toronto-based partner recognized for expertise in civil litigation and extensive on-her-feet experience.

“Litigation is not an area of law so much as an instrument to engage all types of law,” Cynthia says. “Regardless of the type of law at issue in any case, the litigation process for me is the same — immerse myself in the relevant area of law; apply it to the facts; and leverage innovative strategy, persuasive skills, and professional reputation to increase my client’s chances of success.”

Cynthia applies a common-sense approach to problem-solving in a wide range of areas, including commercial litigation and arbitration, appellate advocacy, public and administrative law, professional regulation, and health law.

She has appeared as lead counsel at trials and on applications and appeals, and has litigated before every level of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. She regularly acts as independent legal counsel to tribunals, providing substantive legal advice as issues arise during hearings.

Certified as a Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Ontario, Cynthia also holds a Qualified Arbitrator designation from the ADR Institute of Ontario. “Thoughtful, professional, and aggressive where that is required,” is how Cynthia describes herself. “I want my clients to see me as part of their team; there to help them make a decision in their best interest. They need to know they have legal counsel with the knowledge and experience to effect a successful litigation strategy where necessary so that they can make decisions that make business sense to them.”

What is Cynthia’s philosophy on client service? “Serving as firm chair has helped me better understand business and interpersonal dynamics. I’ve learned that where there are conflicts between interested persons you need to find a way through to identify what’s best for your client. You need to listen to what they really need. A mentor taught me that clients pay us for our judgment. We trade on our reputation for excellence and integrity,” Cynthia explains. “That lesson directs everything we do.”
