PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

About Efua

Efua Gyan is an associate in the London office of Lerners and a member of the Health Law, Labour and Employment, and Dispute Resolution and Advocacy groups. Her non-traditional pathway to the legal profession, paired with her diverse skill set, allows her to approach each case with a unique perspective. She describes herself as “a leader who connects easily with others, and a strong advocate.”

“I’m also committed to leading the charge on institutional change and combatting systemic oppression,” explains Efua. “Working with an Indigenous client on a pro bono matter was a rewarding experience for me. The road to change starts with the first step”

Knowing that each case brings a unique set of complexities, Efua places a high priority on establishing open lines of communications with her clients. Her goal is to ensure she understands the client’s needs and objectives thoroughly, and that her clients are confident in her strategy to get them there.

“I have an interest in Indigenous rights issues, self-determination and sovereignty,” explains Efua. She also likes policy work: supporting and advising organizations, service providers, municipalities, councils, institutions and schools.

After completing a master of public health degree at Boston University, Efua spent two years working with a non-profit organization in rural Haiti and interned with the UN in Arusha, Tanzania. “I learned a lot about getting things done in challenging circumstances,” she says, “and about the role of human rights in impacting the needs of a community.”

During her time in law school, Efua was an executive member of the Osgoode Health Law Association and established and held the position of Cultural Outreach Officer in Osgoode’s Black Law Students Association.
