Bonni Ellis Joins Lerners LLP - News Release

TORONTO, JANUARY 6, 2015 – Lerners LLP is pleased to announce that Bonni Ellis has joined the Toronto office as a partner. A well-known and respected regulatory lawyer, Ms. Ellis brings her unique and specialized skill set which will complement Lerners’ litigation team.

Ms. Ellis has over a decade of experience in professional regulation across a range of professions. She has acted in various capacities for regulatory bodies of all sizes including the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Ontario College of Pharmacists, the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy, the College of Teachers of Ontario and several others.

“Bonni is an exceptional lawyer with an outstanding reputation throughout the regulated professions community,” says Brian Grant, managing partner of Lerners in Toronto. “Her expertise and regulatory professions practice adds a new level of complementary expertise to our litigation practice in Toronto.

Along with her litigation practice, Ms. Ellis has conducted audits and reviews for statutory compliance and has assisted clients with drafting regulations, standards or practice, rules, policies, reference guides, handbooks, manuals and has authored several sets of by-laws. Through her experience she has developed a comprehensive understanding of how different regulators operationalize their public protection mandate and the unique perspective that each regulated profession brings to that goal.

“Lerners represents a perfect fit for me and for my clients. My new colleagues are extremely well-respected, top-tier litigators with extensive experience in professional regulation and appellate advocacy,” says Ms. Ellis. “Equally important, they are a group of people who recognize the benefits of collaboration. These are important qualities for my clients—they want lawyers who not only deliver results but who consult with them throughout the process to ensure the considerations and priorities relevant to their profession are reflected in the work.

Ms. Ellis is a requested and frequent speaker at conferences focused on professional regulation and is also invited regularly to speak to Councils and Committees and to provide orientation and training on matters ranging from investigations and discipline to registration. She also serves as an instructor for the National Certified Investigator/Inspector Training program offered through the Council for Licensure Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR) and has taught the professional regulation component of classes at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law as well as Osgoode’s LLM in health law.

Ms. Ellis has a law degree from the University of Toronto as well as a Master’s Degree and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Philosophy. She serves as a Board Director for the Scarborough Hospital where she is also a member of the Quality and Safety Committee and the Human Resources Committee.
